Lozen
"With arms outstretched and praying, the Apache warrior, Lozen, could ascertain the movements of her enemies, be they U.S. or Mexican cavalries — a useful prophetic power as she fought alongside the likes of Geronimo. It's doubtful the band Lozen has any foes, for the Tacoma, Wash., twosome synergistically embodies more raw force than most bands twice its size. Sometimes recalling a weirder side of the Breeders, or a sludgy-drudgy Luscious Jackson, or the Melvins (but with roaming female harmonies), the power of Lozen is in being experimental and fun while still super-heavy. As for their namesake fighter, she died of tuberculosis as a P.O.W. in an Alabama jail." - SF Bay Guardian

Early show w/PC Worship and Lady Lazarus - 5:00pm, $5 PC Worship
"Washed-out psych? Druggy, fuzz-bliss? Fucked up free-jazz? Whatever you want to call it, PC Worship doesn’t really care, because the band could be any of these things. “It’s definitely not some bedroom pop bullshit. We jam in the living room or the pit,” says PC Worship mastermind Justin Frye from the Italian countryside, where he’s currently playing bass on Gary War’s European tour. While not physically playing in a bedroom, PC Worship also doesn’t sound like it’s cut from the same cloth as bands that can be filed under that tired descriptor. The band’s latest—from what I can tell, thanks to a seemingly endless list of recordings—is a 7-inch called Live Reduxion. The record’s tracks are just a little less melancholy beach pop and a little more, well, different. The band sounds like an East Coast Ariel Pink, but weirder (yes, weirder) and with more distinguished musicianship." - NY Press

Lady Lazarus
"Fans of shadowy dream-pop will be pleased to discover San Jose's Lady Lazarus, whose ephemeral music for voice and piano makes Grouper sound overproduced." - Pitchfork

8:30pm later show w/LA punk legends The Gears and Controllers The Gears (L.A.)
"The Gears were formed in 1978, the heyday of Los Angeles punk, when two childhood buddies from the Glassell Park neighborhood of LA - singer Axxel G. Reese and drummer Dave Drive - joined forces. They created the "punk surfabilly" sound after seeing the early Hollywood punk bands while being influenced by other SoCal cultures. The band's recorded tour de force was the live album "Rockin' at Ground Zero." Shortly after this epic live recording in 1982, the Gears' guitarist Kidd Spike angrily smashed his ax to smithereens mid-set at the Starwood and the Gears were done."
|
The Controllers (L.A.)
Formed in July of 1977 by Kidd Spike, Johnny Stingray, and Gaye Austin, The Controllers became one of the prominent bands in the seminal days of the LA punk community, centered around Brendan Mullen's underground club/rehaersal space, The Masque. In November of 1977, The Controllers recorded their first single for What Records 'Neutron Bomb' and 'Killer Queers'. (bio)

Mike Spiegelman
Standup savant and a founding member of lauded sketch group, Fresh Robots. Not many have the comedic cojones to play second fiddle to a laundry basket but Mike Spiegelman, either lacking fear or the much ballyhooed "shame gene", has done exactly that. And so much more.

Les Milton (White Noise Radio Theatre)
Les Milton is a member of White Noise Radio Theatre, the demi-legendary sketch group that just performed some ecstatically-reviewed reunion shows at the 2011 SF Sketchfest. Tonight, on this very show, in real life, Les will be performing a ten minute musical extravaganza devoted to skin cream.

John Hoogasian
During his last Club Chuckles appearance, the audience thrilled as "Hoogie" attempted to molecularly exit the Hemlock through the back wall of the music room stage. He was, in fact, partially successful.

Amy Schumer
Amy has performed on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and “John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show.” Amy has just come off a guest-starring role opposite Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and has appeared on NBC's "30 Rock" as well as ABC’s "Cupid.” She made her network debut on NBC's “Last Comic Standing” and appears regularly on MTV and VH-1 shows such as “Best Week Ever” and “I love the 80s.” This is Amy's Club Chuckles debut! |
Donny Divanian
Donny’s comedic verisimilitude at times reminds us of an unholy cross twixt _____ and _____, which is a shamefully name-droppy way of saying ‘absurdist _____ comedy with an engaging _____.’ Still, how many other professional _____ coaches can you say that about?!

Loto Ball
Loto Ball’s new band/experience, post-Phantom Limbs. Similar to the Phantom Limbs, this new incarnation has a dark, sinister circus-punk sound with synths, horns, frenetic noise, and Loto’s nasal, anguished vocals. (bio)

Moira Scar
"Moira Scar is a little reminder of the time when punk was weirder and a lot more fun. Like a deliciously demented hybrid of the New York Dolls, Sonic Youth and dark cabaret — plus some deliberately strange and provocative visuals — they’re like GWAR for art school kids. “Slink to Intensity” sounds like it came straight off the soundtrack to one of the odder French animations, while “You Make Me Scream” has an almost Celtic folksy edge to it. If you’re a lover of all things weird, dark, and kind of twisted, you’re going to adore Moira Scar." - East Bay Express |
The Tunnel (rec. release)
You've already played all your Birthday Party, 16 Horsepower, and Swans records to death. You need some new drinking music. The sounds are akin to the art-damaged noise coming out of 1970s New York, 1980s London-via-Berlin, or an 1850s West Coast harbor-town damp with fog and whiskey. (bio)
"Scratchy and acerbic post-MARQUEE MOON death C&W...These guys is Motherfuckers, no less." - Julian Cope |
