Wednesday, November 14  early screening 6:30pm, free // Wooden Shjips show 9:30pm, $7
EARLY! Free screening of the new Ghost live movie

Ghost (Drag City)
No live performance rather a free screening of the new Ghost live movie "Overture."

"In 1984 Ghost was formed in Tokyo. In the beginning, they played only improvisation / freeform music naturally. But when they started their first recording in 1988, their music had been changing to more constructive one. Still now on their live activities we can find they play improvisation sometimes.

"Their music was based on acoustic guitar usually. A lot ethnic instruments or strange instruments are added to it freely on recording. And the place they play were so unique as examples — buddist temples, churches, ruins, metro, fields, woods, caves... Such strange methods are nothing but ones of their expressions. They are Ghost anytime."

LATER! Wooden Shjips, Pink Reason, Psychedelic Horeshit - 9:30pm

Wooden Shjips
Holy Mountain recording artistes WOODEN SHJIPS, hot off their SF Bay Guardian "Goldie" award:

"The latest in the Wooden Shjips' canon of repeato-psyche was recently released on Sub Pop records in the form of a two song single that explores their comportment of disjointed, repetitious and psychotomimetic tuneage. This San Fran quartet caused quite a ripple in the sea of underground music with their debut last year, a self-released 3 song 10” EP, that flooded the opiate receptors of the 300 people lucky enough to get a hold of it. And now that they've got a full-length under their belt on Holy Mountain and this gem on Sub Pop, it seems like their kaleidoscopic flames have just started to engulf the rest of the world.

On this single, the Shjips get it going with “Loose Lips” on the A-side, a song that has a pneumatic, mellow drone that slowly builds without a crescendo, and vocals that are delivered in a meditative, even aloof echo. It leaves a feeling of pleasant detachment as the metallic buzz of the guitar winds around the hypnotic drums and the slow gallop of the organ. The Wooden Shjips play with their organ sound quite a bit throughout their catalog, sometimes coming off as the classic 60s psychedelic instrument that gave the genre its instantly recognizable sound decades ago like they do on the B-side in “Start to Dreaming.” Other times, the organ serves as an anchor with the drums, where the guitar and vocals drift in a current of mind-collapsing repetition, like you would hear from Spacemen 3. It seems that in one swoop, the Shjips are able to capture the entire gambit of psychedelic music in even the smallest of details such as song titles like “Start to Dreaming,” or their name itself, “Wooden Shjips.” What should seem like a misspelling oversight comes off as mystic, microdot-addled wisdom." - Victim of Time

Pink Reason
"Kevin DeBroux/Pink Reason's music revives the reverb-soaked gloom of Joy Division, Section 25, and any other industrial-goth outfit that recorded for Factory Records in the early '80s. But unlike Interpol, the Wisconsin-born DeBroux (aka Pink Reason) is no retro slave. He's far more audacious in terms of composition and production.

On 'Cleaning the Mirror,' his six-song debut, the singer-songwriter filters post-punk's frigid atmospherics and a cavernous pulse through the hazy, lo-fi strum of Columbus' Jim Shepard and early Royal Trux.

Surprisingly, Cleaning the Mirror is a rather refreshing listen, despite ominous, home-recorded dirges like "Motherfucker," "Dead End," and "Goodbye." DeBroux (who apparently consumed a lot of drugs while making this music) isn't trying to sound like a vacuous fashionista from Brooklyn or London. He's a small-town midwesterner, bleeding ragged and at times earthy American rock." - Justin Farrar, Cleveland Scene

Psychedelic Horseshit
The sounds on Magic Flowers Droned captures the rickety skeletal pop of Step Forward-era Fall, the lo-fi fuzz of Swell Maps, and static noblesse of Slay Tracks-era Pavement. Is that classical enough for ya?
Considered by the Columbus cognoscenti as the "little brother band" (Stooges-style) to Times New Viking (MC5-style), Psychedelic Horseshit first came about as three buds determined to crash a hippie fest and jam retardo. When asked for their name, singer/guitarist Matt Whitehurst replied, "Just call us Psychedelic Horseshit." The band killed, the name stuck, and thus the die was ignominiously cast. Since then, they played with the Urinals, Country Teasers, Dan Melchior, Blues Control, toured with Pink Reason and Times New Viking, ruled a couple showcases at the 2007 SXSW, basically doing what they can to lay the foundation for the release of this debut LP (a previous 7-inch on the Columbus Discount label made many 2006 Best Of lists, too).

Distempered, jaded, harmonious, and ramshackle, Psychedelic Horseshit keeps the glass half full; the question is, do you have the courage to drink their wry and wizened brew? Sure you do, it's the tonic of champions!" - Midheaven.com

Thursday, November 15  Chuckles 8pm, $5 // late show is at 10pm, $6
Early: Club Chuckles Comedy Cavalcade!!

Club Chuckles presents The Comedians of Rawk
Set your laff-track to stun as Club Chuckles, the Hemlock Tavern's monthly comedy cavalcade, squanders the last of its goodwill on a Very Special Episode of rock band comedy savants performing standup.

N-Word Rich!
N-Word Rich, drummer from the band Psychedelic Horseshit, was/is a member of the Pittsburgh, PA, comedy troupe Moustache Machine. But as we just heard from Siltbreeze headquarters this very day, no one has actually ever seen N-Word Rich in the standing position, so that alone should guarantee the yuks.

Johnny Meggit
Former sidekick/co-star of the Casanova Lounge's live comedy talk show "Happy Hour with Bob McDonald", star of the hit video "You Stupid Assholes are So Fucking Busted!" and currently the frontman of the rock band The Get Offs.

Chris Portfolio
Hot off his controverisal debut standup appearance at the Space Gallery, Chris Portfolio will once again dare to cross the talent moat to that klieg light tanning booth known as the Hemlock stage.

Later! Intelligence & Ohsees

Intelligence
Sporting a new lineup and a new album both of which completely SLAY, Intelligence delivered huge at El Rio this past Saturday. Ambulance-chasers and bandwagon-jumpers, you don't won't wanna miss!

"Given that Lars Finberg quit the A Frames to concentrate on the Intelligence, and that Deuteronomy is the first Intelligence album to be recorded in an honest-to-goodness studio with a producer, Finberg could be accused of taking his music seriously. However, listening to Deuteronomy proves this isn't the case -- the ever-so-slightly cleaner sonics just make it a clearer glimpse into Finberg's frenetic imagination. On "Moon Beeps," gurgling keyboards give way to gargantuan riffs with a dynamic impact that wouldn't have been possible on previous Intelligence albums. Other than that, however, Finberg's approach hasn't really changed significantly since Boredom and Terror (like that album, Deuteronomy is the work of Finberg alone), but that's a good thing. The Intelligence's melodies are so immediate, so relentless, they'd be jingles if they weren't drenched in prickly distortion and gooey, swampy reverb and sung by what sounds like a pissed-off android. Unlike the buzzsaw thrills of Boredom and Terror and Icky Baby, on Deuteronomy Finberg slows the tempo down just a little bit and gets a lot more eclectic. "Dating Cops" stomps in on a sped-up riff nicked from the Peter Gunn or Dragnet theme songs; "Rooms & Bags" sways and shuffles like cyber-rockabilly in a jukebox from the future; and "Outer Echelon"'s herky-jerky new wave could be a transmission from The Forbidden Zone. The Intelligence's music has never been as gleefully, unrepentantly weird." - All Music Guide

Ohsees
No, John, thank YOU!

Friday, November 16  early show 6:30pm, $5 // late show 9:30pm, $6
early show with The Spider Bags and Les Hormones

The Spider Bags
"Hailing from North Carolina, out of nowhere but with the sound of a vintage anti-establishment America, fueled by whiskey and the treads of a long, harshly departed woman. The Spider Bags' A Celebration of Hunger was recorded in a whirlwind, with the six-piece band huddling around a microphone and preaching the country / punk / garage gospel with Shane MacGowan toothlessly smiling, listening to the songs of drink and debauchery.

Leader Dan McGee is the new great American songwriter-on-the-dole, whose multi-purposed voice sings of two things: girls and women, and does so with some of the most impressive lyrics to come out of an American since Nick Cave no…hmmm…Shane…no, he is from Ireland. Damn. Well, in the tradition of all those greats who steal from the Americana ethos and make careers out of doing so. We bring to you The Spider Bags, the first great European-stealing Americana band from America. Let freedom reign." (bio)

Les Hormones
Primitive scorch par excellence.

late show w/SEAN, WBTE, Tarrakian

SEAN
Sean's singular grind rock stands tall on the strength of only two pillars: keyboardist Luke Laplante and drummer Mike Peterson. Named via a phonetic play on their former incarnation as “Tion” (inspired by the prevalence of said suffix among death metal bands, SuffocaTION, IncantaTION, etc.), Sean throw down with memorable style: Mike Peterson’s many jazz-master inspirations (such as Jack DeJohnette and Shelly Manne) ride shotgun on 80’s thrash-metal overdrive – and Luke Laplante’s homage to Jon Lord (Deep Purple), Jan Hammer (Mahavishnu Orchestra) and Wayne Horvitz (Naked City) tweaks out to classic grindcore and powerviolence (ala Man is the Bastard and Carcass). Thankfully, the shredding instrumental maelstrom that slays forth emanates from gear-setups devoid of the gadget-overkills that often plague prog-minded musicians. (bio)

"Sean can boast one of the best drummers in the world" - Aesop (Ludicra)

"Sean is like two guys from the same psych ward who were given instuments" - TJ (Book of Black Earth)

"braaaaghh bragggh, I'm fucking wasted and you guys slay!" - Brent (Mastodon)

We Be The Echo
"A maddening array of time signature mayhem informed by math rock, jazz, Zappa and a smidgen of dub sensibility... talented crew make bass, guitar and drums sound like an orchestra, their smokin' beat instrumentals bridging rhythm section with the cerebal directive of the avant garde." - Splendid

Tarrakian
70's rock, doom, metal and punk.

Saturday, November 17  9:30pm, $7

Mist & Mast
from the still-smoldering embers of The Red Thread.

The Dying Californian
"The band is powerful live, and how great it is to hear the peculiarly honest, catchy, emotive sentiments captured here in true form. It's country in spirit, with a soul not in twangy pedal steel but rather the raw, husky vocals of singer/guitarist Nate Dalton. The melodies are dusty and endearing, equal parts barroom camaraderie, introspective laments, gunfight dramatics, and lonely high plains adventure-all with a modern lyrical bent. Rhodes organ accompaniment, and varying guitar parts, not to mention hearty distortion and snappy, aggressive percussion in all the right places." - Zero Magazine

The Winks
Montreal, Quebec's THE WINKS:

"Like Frog Eyes mashed with baroque chamber music filtered through early 60s girl-band pop. The Vancouver group eschews traditional indie instrumentation while embracing willfully obscure lyrics and calliope-esque melodies."
-See Magazine

"great swells of instrumentation show the band maturing in real-time. For proof, look no further than the darkly elegiac "0[]." Or, if you'd rather stay on the celebratory side, stick to tracks like "Slumber Party Let's Go." Either way, you're getting a gift."
– Spin Magazine

Sunday, November 18  6:00pm early show, $7
Just announced!! Club Rumpus presents: KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW & Hank IV

King Khan & BBQ
Now, I could tell you about BBQ (aka Mark Sultan), his past in bands like Les Sexareenos or The Spaceshits or his solo records on labels like Bomp. I could tell you about King Khan's pseudo-celebrity in Europe, or his past in The Spaceshits, or how his band, The Shrines, are a ten-piece soul-funk revue that have been described as the tightest band in the world. But these names and facts probably mean nothing to you, so let's talk about the real nitty gritty: The King Khan & BBQ Show.

Two guys. One smashing a snare, bass drum and tambourine with his bare feet, molesting his guitar and singing like a possessed angel. The other spinning and howling like a freak and belting it out on his guitar like a savage. What does it all sound like? It sounds like five men. People name typical suspects when trying to describe them: The Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Black Flag, The Falcons, Sam Cooke, The Sonics.... It's all true, and more. The show? A mess. Love songs, punkers, improvised riot-starters, dance-floor shakers, sing-along stompers, wild rockers, you name it. They always drench the crowd in raw energy, and they're always the last ones dancing."
--Larry Hardy, In The Red

Hank IV
HANK IV is a San Francisco panic-skiffle rock band with no relation whatsoever to the Hank Williams clan. Fronted by the spectacle of singer Bob McDonald and his jaw-dropping dance moves, Hank IV plays hard-charging, melodic, dynamic, primitive and cathartic rock music that has been likened to “Crime meets Viletones meets Styrenes punk” (Z-Gun Magazine) and by WFMU’s DJ Terre T as “a sick combination of Volcano Suns and Blue Cheer and Chain Gang!”

Mirthkon
"Six piece band of dual guitars, dual woodwinds, bass and drums with a small amount of vocals. It mixes comtemporary stylings (i.e. the guitars are often crunchy) with stop on a dime avant-progressive influences such as Picchio dal Pozzo, Miriodor, Blast, Henry Cow, Frank Zappa, etc." - Wayside Music

Free-Jazz Gospel Supreme 80

Wednesday, November 21  9:30pm, $10
Alasdair Roberts
"Roberts’ decision to devote himself to traditional music has resulted in three fine solo albums, of which this is the crowning achievement. Will Oldham oversaw the sessions, recorded in a converted Aberdeenshire barn, and Roberts effortlessly makes explicit the shared vocabulary of folk’s natural weirdness and experimental music’s studied strangeness. With skeletal singing, scraping fiddles, sinister drones and unwavering, death-like tempos, he discovers the inner mystery of traditional music and shows that if this infinitely expressive material is respected, it may yet reward us with results that sound utterly unprecedented." - The Times (UK)

Charalambides
"Charalambides have surely broken new ground in the primitive/folk/mystic/improv/psych valley in which they toil. (bio)

"Here is a truly 21st century experimental ethnic music that explores quietness and stasis... in the same way that musicians in the second half of the 20th century discovered amplification, noise and speed." - The Wire

Hélène Renaut
"Brittany native Hélène Renaut usually weaves them on guitar and vocals and delivers them in either French or English. Her songs have been described as 'tweedy tunes with literate lyrics, languorous like red wine' (Pat Johnson, West Coast Performer) and 'pastoral beauties that call to mind Donovan, early Joni Mitchell, Hope Sandoval." (bio)
